Reverse costing

“Reverse Costing is the process of disassembling a device to identify manufacturing technology and calculate cost”, Romain Fraux, CEO.

Since 1993 we have analyzed hundreds of integrated circuits, modules, electronic boards and systems for the benefit of large corporations in the semiconductor, automotive and telecom, consumer and energy sectors.

Because of our experience and collaboration with customers we are able to perform highly competitive and accurate Reverse Costing analysis of:

  • Processes (MEMS, Compound Semiconductor, 3D Packaging, IC…)
  • Devices and Modules : ASIC, MEMS, Power Electronics, LED, SoC, System In Package (SiP), RF, …
  • Advanced Packaging (WLP, fan out, WLO…)

Reverse Costing services support strategic decisions to:

  • validate project costs
  • inform purchasing decisions
  • benchmark competitive products

A “Reverse Costing” analysis includes technological data and economic calculations. Usually based on the teardown of a sample, it provides detailed information on the process involved, and the materials and dimensions. A process flow is extracted from these observations, supplemented with publicly available data, and simulated using our cost simulation tool. Results for multiple factors are obtained, from cost per step to yield influence.

Most often, these analyses are requested directly by our customers who provide us with physical samples. However we also publish some standard reports on new technology products that are available through our catalogue.

Our in-house developed cost simulation tools are the foundation of all our analyses. These proprietary tools are available under license to our customers.

Reverse engineering and value analysis focus on product design to achieve cost reductions. The processes used to produce and market a product are also sources of potential cost reduction. Thus, redesigning processes to improve their efficiency can also contribute to achieving the needed cost reductions.
